Informal essay ” Is there a key to success”?

Joey Abely

After analyzing and listening to both podcasts I feel confident in myself to be able to do that again. With that being said we are given this assignment to write about a big picture question. The biggest picture question that I feel could be asked is, “Is there a secret to success?”. This question draws up mixed emotions for me. I feel as though there is no key to success it is just about your work ethic and your money management or investing skills. I am going to make a text to podcast connection through networking because in the last podcast we listened to, they were talking about Bill Gates. Currently Gates is the second richest person in the world with over ninety billion United States dollars. Krulwhich (the head spokesperson on the podcast) said how gates would sneak out of his house at the age of 12 years old at two in the morning to go play on computers at a community center that was opened twenty four hours. He then would go on to state the work ethic Gates had. He would draw points to us explaining that it was very impressive that this twelve year old would sacrifice his sleep to go play on computers just because he wanted to. Later Gates went on to build his own company starting from his garage at his house called; Microsoft. The next thing anyone knew this teenager grew from his garage to the second richest person on the planet; that is extremely impressive. That just goes to show that work ethic Gates portrayed helped him immensely into becoming who he is and how successful he is today. If that doesn’t prove it to you let us talk about how they also talked about Wayne Gretzky, arguably the best NHL player to ever play would sit in front of the T.V at the age of just two and show emotions for the hockey game he was watching before he would even walk or speak to anyone. This just shows that the only key to success would be just working hard and persevering through every challenge that is thrown at you. That would then leave us to open ended questions; is success just based on luck? How can I find myself being successful? Is there really any correlation between these podcasts that talk about Wayne Gretzky and Bill Gates or are they completely irrelevent?

  1. Hi Joey,

I’m having a hard time finding your theory of “how curiosity works” in this informal essay, or identifying “what you saw [in your questions maps] that helps you think about how you might compose a curiosity-driven essay” [which is what we’re about to start working on. I do see that you answered the very last bit of the prompt on pp. 57-58 of Habits. By leaving out the more reflective part of the prompt and only focusing on the question you’d like to write about, you’ve missed part of the learning that connects the work we’ve been doing about attention and question asking to the upcoming writing project. Please revise this essay to include your answers to all parts of the prompt and try to avoid simplifying assignments like this one in the future.
